For the Coffee Table Book – Issue #13

Hanging rice or puso are fist-sized pouches of young (or yellow) coconut palm leaves containing cooked rice.

The yellow coconut leaves are woven into pouches where grains of rice are placed and boiled. For lack of a direct translation, they were called “hanging rice” because they are often seen dangling or “hanging” from a bamboo stand. And along with this distinguishing quality, puso are best for mobile meals.

Puso is also a means of livelihood for poor Cebuanos. Walking through alleys in major public markets in Cebu, one would always see puso delivered smoking hot to food stalls along the streets selling barbecue and other grilled food, although puso are not limited to this kind of food selection. They also go well with a selection of stews.

Puso is an integral part of the culture of the Cebuanos. Through the years, it has become a symbol of the life and living of the Cebuano – always on the move and highly adaptable.

    thanks for sharing!

When I went to Cebu years ago, I saw many people eating puso (+ barbeque) along the streets. Like what you said, my cousins told me it’s part of the city’s culture kaya nagpapicture gyud ko. Haha :)

Kikit, the first time I went to Cebu I was also curious of puso to the point that I thought of bringing some home as “pasalubong”… Hehe… :D

if there’s something that i miss about cebu other than its lechon, it would be puso and ngohiong. cant find it here in manila. i always crave. it’s cheap but really good.

Yep, another palatable duo: ngohiong and puso… I also noticed ngohiong is not found in Iloilo or in Bacolod… Another Cebu trademark I guess… :D

Kapatid, dugay na gyud diay wala ko katungtong ug Cebu…I miss eating near Chong Hua or pier pag mouli ko probinsya during the sem break…

Kapatid, you mean Larsian near Chong Hua? :D The last time I’ve been there was in February when I introduced 2 international delegates of the SFC International Conference to Larsian… :) I seldom go there since it is quite far from where I live… But that place will really help your pocket from getting ripped. Low prices pa rin… :D

Will return the favor.

Tama ka Watusi, convenient nga ito kainin if you are mobile… :D

Beautiful photo! I’m so sad this morning, and this just reminded me of all that is beautiful and good in the world. The composition too is quite pleasing. The tree and the woman look like sisters. So many parallel lines. Did you crop it afterwards?

You are such a faithful Crayons viewer. I fade in and out of currency as I have access to free time and the internet at the same time.

Caroline, I actually had the pic in horizontal shot… When I reviewed the picture, I realized it could have been much better if I did it in vertical, so I decided to do a crop. Your blog is one of a kind and I am amazed by your artistry. I will always continue to be a faithful visitor. Your visits are greatly appreciated. Thanks again… :D

I will always remember puso not mainly for its taste but for the happy memories that it had become a part of.

    Mark,
I loved the picture of the woman working on her rice packets. What a clever idea. Isn’t it a wonderful thing to share different customs around the world on our blogs?
I just noticed, in your comments, that you have one from Caroline. I knew that she took time off, but hadn’t checked back to see if she returned. I really enjoyed her artwork and will check in with her. I’m hoping that you have a wonderful week off.

Hello Balisha… Indeed through our blogs we share each other’s customs…Yes, Caroline was her. She’s back now and had been posting entries quite regularly… I had a great weekend! Thanks very much…
