For the Coffee Table Book – Issue #10

Chance is always powerful.
Let your hook be always cast;
In the pool where you least expect it, there will be a fish.

- Ovid, Roman poet (43 BC – 17 AD)

This is one of my favorite pictures in my stock. This was taken sometime in May, 2005.

While strolling along the outskirts of Ilaya in Lapulapu City, I passed by a man squatting in the side of the road dike, fishing in the cleared-out mangrove swamp of the now abandoned Coral Reef Hotel. He was having a blast as his hook does not stay long in the water. Fish kept on biting for their doom. I chatted with him for a while and when he warmed up to me I asked if I could take a picture of one of his catch.

The fish was very much alive when the picture was taken. It flipped out of the man’s palm several times and he kept on picking it up. This explains the grains of sand in his fingers.

Like the quotation. Life is full of little surprises indeed. :)

I agree Kikit… And we need to keep on enjoying the ride… :)

I least expect to blog or “publish publicly”. Now, im blogging like a bull kicked on his behind, hihi. It takes some pain for the fish to be hooked up I imagine. Blessings of more comfort kapatid…

Salamat kapatid… :) I also try to minimize personal posts, but sometimes I feel the need to do so, with most of those in our circle. I was not able to think of the fish’s pain, but now I do… :) Must have been hell for him, with the hook and all those flips… Hmmm… I admit we cause a lot of pain to other living organisms for us to fulfill our needs…

Kapatid, pasensya na at ngayon lang uli ako nakadalaw dito. I spent many days, in silence, sa isang lugar na walang signal ang phone at walang internet connection. Surprisingly, I enjoyed those days.

Ipinaaabot ko ang aking pakikiramay sa pamilya mo, bagama’t huli na ako.

Looking at the picture above, I remembered a similar photo I took several years ago with my point and shoot film camera. I submitted it to the school paper nung high school pa ako and it got printed.

Btw, hopefully I’ll be able to send the pencils in two weeks time.

I agree that it is indeed delightful that these opportunities, servings of grace, do pop up… Capture the moment – ika nga ng Kodak… :)

Nice shot, you even captured the hardworking hands of this fisherman.

    Thank you HC!

It looks like the man has worked hard to make his way in the world. His hand is weathered and worn. I love the picture.

Mark, that is a great picture of simple life, I really love it. And the quotation you chose is really apt, yes, let our hooks be always cast!

PS….I finally decide to have an independent blog, you can find me blogging now at http://www.thejoysofsimplelife.com/

Sorry, if I had been jumping, I guess that’s what happens when we are exploring and growing, and welcomes change. I hope to really keep it longer since it is not easy to write and lose them again.

Hi Miss Beth. Will surely visit your new site and will update links…. :) Indeed, change is bound to happen. And we need to be pliant enough to always eplore and grow… By the way, what will happen now to your other blogs?

  12. April 20, 2009 at 10:30 am

oh, i did not know if my first comment went through Mark, I did not get the confirmation which I usually get. Anyway, that is really one great shot of an otherwise simple happening, yet very meaningful.

PS….my new blog home is http://www.thejoysofsimplelife.com/

Miss Beth, it was labeled as spam due to the URL… :) Thanks again…

Hi AC… Galing naman ng observation mo… As to the fish, the locals call it “sinaw-sinaw” but I don’t know the English equivalent (if there is) and I cannot classify the fish ala Carolus Linnaeus… :)
